Contaminated samples can be a problem, as can certain conditions mentioned above that generate similar anti-bodies to those created by HIV in the system.

When we get a positive result on any test, we do repeat screenings with confirmatory tests like the Western Blot.

However, these are comparatively rare events. Most of the time, a positive ELISA means HIV antibodies in the blood.

But it's interesting that this test, which the CDC still considers the gold standard, is still not 100% reliable. Nothing is. No test is absolutely foolproof and neither is any barrier method.

The fact that the public must wrap it's head around if it can get past AHF's bullshit is that there is no way to make porn 100% safe from HIV anymore than there is a way to make individuals 100% safe from any of the various things that can be contracted through sexual contact. Certainly AHF doesn't claim to have anything so magical. You sign some papers when you get tested by them that basically acknowledge the possibility of a testing failure.

But what we have is the best there is, and if it weren't we'd have had dozens if not hundreds of HIV transmissions in porn over the past dozen years.

I ask again, if our system sucks so bad, how come we're all still alive? How come we've had a total of two confirmed work-related HIV transmissions since the institution of universal DNA testing while Los Angeles County overall has had about 30,000 new cases over the same time period?

I've asked these questions many times before and all I've ever gotten from the condom crowd was AHF boilerplate shouted in my face even louder, as if loud equals true.

No matter how AHF tries to twist them the specifics continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system, and the fact that theirs is far from perfect, as the poster above me points out.Ernest greenenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-35508353193171575472013-09-13T17:12:55.638-05:002013-09-13T17:12:55.638-05:00One correction: ELISA tests can show false positiv...One correction: ELISA tests can show false positives for a number of reasons: autoimmune disease; certain vaccinations, if recent; Lyme disease; blood transfusions, etc. More information here:

http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/false-positive-hiv-test
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003538.htm

The ELISA test is highly sensitive but not highly specific, and a positive result always has to be confirmed by a Western Blot before a diagnosis is considered final.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-64873973411490378542013-09-11T14:55:45.411-05:002013-09-11T14:55:45.411-05:00WOW...late developments breaking.

As a producer friend once told me, "It's easy enough to get someone's attention. A rabid dog slinks into your office and it definitely gets your attention but that doesn't mean you're glad to see him or that you're interested in why he's there."

Ernest greenenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-31091553049437201932013-09-09T20:05:22.506-05:002013-09-09T20:05:22.506-05:00And while we're spiking rumors, here's the...And while we're spiking rumors, here's the latest AHF false alarm to go on the spindle courtesy of PASS, which just released this statement:

"As promised, we are sending out updates as soon as information is available.

First, I would like to address the rumors of a fourth performer testing positive for HIV. None of the testing facilities, nor the doctors associated with the facilities, have any results of a fourth performer testing positive. This information came from AHF who is currently trying to push regulation on the industry and has, on many occasions, reported false information to the media to advance their political agenda. Just last month AHF started a media frenzy and industry scare over false information of a positive syphilis result claiming an “outbreak” when in reality no performers were positive for syphilis. It is extremely likely that this situation is more posturing for AHF’s political agenda. Again, we have no evidence of a fourth performer testing positive for HIV.

As far as the partner identification for the third performer is concerned, all first generation partners have been identified and have retested. Results for all of the performers but one are back and all results are negative. The final result will be back tomorrow. The doctors associated with our testing facilities will teleconference tomorrow to discuss the results and next steps concerning performer testing and the moratorium.

Finally, to address some additional rumors, the doctors have confirmed that the third performer did not work with Ms. Bay or Mr. Daily.

We will continue to provide updates as we receive additional information. Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation."

Funny how the latest rumor, treated as news by such reliable AHF megaphones as The L.A. Weekly and Radaronline, turns out to be yet more bullshit.

I'm guessing that someone who works on the gay side of the industry tested positive on one of AHF's beloved ELISAs they offer free to all comers (who don't seem to know or care that the results from the ELISA can be as much as six months out of date due to its exceptionally long window period) came up positive at one of AHF's facilities, which do not report to the PASS database and AHF, always so touchy about client privacy, has rushed this out as stop-the-presses news. Of course, if this "performer" doesn't work on the straight side and isn't part of the tested talent pool we use, his misfortunes don't affect the overall picture whatsoever.

But hey, why let the facts fuck up a good piece of propaganda?

Predictably, AHF hasn't bothered to identify this supposed new case or do anything constructive to help make sure the person in question had no contacts among the tested talent, but what motive would they have to do so, since every performer who tests positive is good news for AHF's sleazy campaign?
Ernest Greenenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-21741610186084133662013-09-09T19:17:00.064-05:002013-09-09T19:17:00.064-05:00AHF is evil, not stupid. IF Michael Weinstein, who...AHF is evil, not stupid. IF Michael Weinstein, who has been willing enough to stand on stages next to Shelley Lubben, Darren James and Derrick Burts, has thus far refused to acknowledge Black's support suggests very strongly that he doesn't want it. Black's own history as a maker of some of the nastiest gonzo porn ever marketed, along with his felony conviction for doing so and his well-deserved reputation as a loose cannon make him too radioactive to embrace, lest even more of Weinstein's hair fall out.

Nope, AHF doesn't want any talking heads fronting for them they can't control and nobody can control Black, least of all himself.Ernest Greenenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-19779499768431533222013-09-09T19:05:38.444-05:002013-09-09T19:05:38.444-05:00Ernest and Sheldon:

Though, I'm sure that his mouth will ultimately post a check that his wallet will have to cover...so to speak.

As for the latest in this episode...I have my theories, but I'm holding them back for now until the fog clears out. Black and Ross have been spreading dangerous misinformation, interspersed with wild conspiracy theories and vile personal attacks on everyone who has, in their view, refused to take them seriously. Their problem is that pretty much no one does take them seriously. Our problem is that relative newcomers to the industry who don't know either its history or the complexities of its current situation might be vulnerable to the tsunami of bullshit that pours forth from these effluent outlets every day.

However, this is a problem that may well solve itself. Paid advertising has all but disappeared from AFYI in recent weeks. Black has no money of his own to continue his vendetta, which seems to have grown mainly out of the refusal of major companies to pick up the legal bills from his obscenity prosecution (which, BTW, they should have in my opinion and the industry politics that prevented that from happening do indeed suck, so his personal beef is not entirely unfounded),

Neither of these gentleman has proved able to run a profitable business for long and with all their newly-minted enemies, their access to revenue, and thus their prognosis for staying in public view, could best be described as guarded.

IF the ranting keeps up and names keep being named as they are, some line may be crossed that triggers an actual libel suit, which neither has the money to defend. Said suit would probably be negotiated out with an agreement to STFU in lieu of vast damage awards and a blessed silence will fall across that insignificant corner of the internet.

Either way, what's going on there is not helpful to anyone, including the perpetrators themselves, and no one with any experience or any influence in the business will lift a finger to defend them when the hammer finally comes down.Ernest Greenenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385392963347857134.post-71203113380861026872013-09-09T18:35:17.473-05:002013-09-09T18:35:17.473-05:00Latest AdultFYI headline: "Will Someone Put a...Latest AdultFYI headline: "Will Someone Put a Bullet in Diane Duke's Head And End This Misery? the first moratorium should have never been lifted"

That is the latest, dangerous crap from Rob Black's chief minion, Gene Ross.

Ever since Ross has been obsessed with not having inherited the ownership of AVN from Paul Fishbein (he claims Fishbein promised him eventual ownership in a private conversation in a car.
