I hate to say this , but yeah, filed under typical.
I'm not very surprised by this, but I am somewhat surprised considering next to CA, FL produces probably the most pornography in the US. I was just there, aside from rather conservative Orlando (home of DisneyWorld!), porn and such seems to be pretty much tolerated in FL and seen as, well, a business...as do various other forms of adult entertainment. What even makes this more disgusting and unfortunate is it seems like this fellow was good at his job....
Good grief! I wonder if this guy has any legal recourse over this termination. Not sure, since a city council deposing a mayor probably doesn't constitute a "firing" in a legal sense.
ReplyDeleteStill, hopefully some negative publicity can be brought to bear on the city that did this (Fort Myers, FL) so that just maybe in the future firing somebody with a sex work history or relationship to a sex worker doesn't come across as the inherently good PR move that many seem to think it is.
I'm looking at the Fort Myers News-Press website and it seems the firing is not popular locally:

The town council defends its decision based on its "family-friendly image". >>gag<<
Yeah, because firing somebody over who they've married is so pro-family.

ReplyDeleteHaving...well...a long convoluted relationship with the State of Florida, there is some insight I have on this whole deal...
Ft. Myers is often considered the birth place of that insanity known as "Spring Break". The town had a very lax and mellow attitude towards partying and sex and all those things for quite some time...
then a few big time churches decided to make the pleasant little town of Ft. Myers their home.
You can guess how it went from there. Same is true for more than a few towns/ cities in the sunshine state, actually.
Interesting. It seems like a lot of local grass-roots right-wing activism can be traced back to one or more mega-churches setting up shop. Anti-abortion, anti-porn, creationism in schools, and the rest of it.
ReplyDeleteThat shows that the religious fundies are taking over the politics in Florida. Florida is part of the US Bible Belt but I call it the Believing in Stupid Myths Belt. California is not part of the Bible Belt but the religious fundies will try to make it like that.
