Bob's new book

Robert Jensen is coming out with a new book, Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. Still in pre-press, it promises to be "his most personal and difficult book to date" and "reignite one of the fiercest debates in contemporary feminism". We'll see.

All I have to say is – interesting choice of cover art, dude.

More here, including a link to a link to a recent radio interview with Jensen.

  2. if bob got his wish and there was no porn/sex biz, what would he do for a living? maybe I'd find him standing next to me in line at the unemployement office...

  3. His most personal?

Why do I get the feeling that means he gets to share in great detail precisely what got him off the hardest, and he gets the thrill of knowing thousands! of women! will read! about him! coming! justaslongashetacksonthe"I'mabadboy"bit?

  4. That book cover is his most "personal and difficult".

  5. So, funny thing -
Although I (should I be ashamed to admit this?) have no idea who Robert Jensen is (because I started reading about pro and anti porn movements all of a month ago), through a crazy series of events involving me working a stint at a book convention, I own a copy of this book already. I have not yet read it, but am now thinking I'll go do that.

And, well, I picked it up because of the cover art.

I don't think so. But that cover and the ad copy saying the book will be "personal and difficult" sounds to me like he's going to get confessional with it.

  14. OK, I stand corrected....he does look a bit too young for a professor, anyway.

But is that supposed to be a pic of a young man masturbating to an image of porn?? If so, then WTF?!?!?!

How DARE Jensen take such an intimate, private moment of a young man in the throes (sp??) of private pleasure and make it look so.....dirty?? Sleazy?? So...objectifiable??

In short...how is he any different from the pornographers that he supposedly indicts for promoting "masculinity"??

Ren's right...what would Jensen do if there was no porn in the world??

    Eeeewwwwwww...get him off me, please.

Well, there's the rub. (har, har – Help, I'm possessed by the spirit of Sheldon!)

The guy on the book cover looks like he's jerking off in a bathroom stall. (An anonymous blowjob is another possibility.) He doesn't look like he could be actually watching any kind of porn. So what's the cover implicitly critiquing? Is it porn or is it masturbation or orgasms in general?

It gets to the core problem with Jensen, in that I don't think he sees anything positive in male sexuality at all; he pretty much just sees his own guilt.

He might have taken a porno magazine to the bathroom - or, he might have some porno stored on his iPod or cell phone.

Either way, what's Jensen's beef with men masturbating? What exactly does this dipstick expect men who don't have a partner to do?

  19. "Either way, what's Jensen's beef with men masturbating?"

    It's because he's a Calvinist.

  20. o yeah, i saw that.

"Here I stand, I can do no other..."

heh, actually, you know, that would be a good tagline for that cover.

  21. "Here I stand, I can do no other..."

That was Luther, not Calvin (nor Hobbes).

    ReplyDelete
  22. i knew that! but Calvin doesn't have anything as apropos, and it's all part of the same dour line really.
